. hack Part 4: QUARANTINE
2004 has been a big year for bandai. aside from its lesser known gaming expeditions , japanese softco bandai's dot hack franchise has proved hugely popular with the gaming masses , with three games in the four-part series released in just seven months. and as 2004 draws to a close , so does bandai's rpg epic with the final instalment of dot hack - quarantine. as events in the world continue to create havoc in the real world , cc corp faces increasing pressure to move the game servers offline , meaning certain death for all comatose victims. it's up to you now. can you cure this virus and restore order in this virtual hell? and can you do it before time runs out for your friend , orca? though instantly playable by those unfamiliar to the series , quarantine is unarguably better suited players of the previous three games , all of whom have the option to import their characters and statistics across for the final chapter. as the last part of what is effectively a single game split in four , the visual style and gameplay of quarantine remains pretty much the same as it did before. however , as the closing episode , bandai's final offering is much harder than its predecessors. what would have been considered boss battles in the series' previous games are now par for the course as protagonist kite faces off against a number of foes armed with formidable statistics and abilities. thankfully , quarantine hosts the highest levels of elemental and summoning magic , not to mention a few devastating attack skills , affording players at least a reasonable chance off success in the proceedings. those skilled enough to survive the obstacles quarantine throws at them will ultimately be rewarded with a conclusive end showcased in a very respectable 10-minute sequence. all in all , the final chapter of the dot hack story is perhaps the best in the series. but whatever your opinion , you can be sure that quarantine will leave series-long players feeling fulfilled. questions are answered , and the proceedings are brought to a close in one of the finest endings seen in the rpg genre.

Ever since ea first acquired the bond licence , the resulting roster of both movie tie-ins and original titles has constantly suffered comparisons to the standard-setting n64 game goldeneye , and in most cases fallen short of the mark. well it's about time this stopped as , aside from the fact that its protagonist is the legendarily suave british agent , this latest bond-em-up has nothing at all in common with rare's most famous of first-person shooters. and this is mainly down to the fact that everything or nothing is more of a bond 'experience' rather than just a game , featuring a host of different gameplay elements , involving original narrative , and some of the highest production values we've ever seen. from the moment you finish the first level and the intro credits kick in , you kind of get the idea that you're in for a very 'film-like' experience. and you are - the original storyline (written by bruce feirstien , responsible for the tomorrow never dies and the world is not enough films) is witty , humourous , camp and centres on the threat of world destruction at the hands of an unpronounceable eastern european. the cast , including pierce brosnan , willem dafoe , judi dench , shannon elizabeth , and john cleese , have all lent their respective face scans and voice talent to the game , and , throughout , the game powers along , full of all the typical high-speed action , death-defying scenarios and plenty of silver screen cinematics. as mentioned before , everything or nothing is built up of various different gameplay styles , the main being the new third-person perspective , designed to showcase all the bond moves at their best. this sees you take control of 007 , splinter cell-style , as you explore , shoot and fist-fight your way through the game's assorted levels , whilst taking cover behind various parts of the environments in an element reminiscent of kill. switch. as with a lot of recent bond titles , the game features a great deal of driving-based missions but , this time they're a welcome addition to the proceedings - rather than the tacked-on compulsory levels we've experienced in the past - that benefit from ea's need for speed engine and thus deliver plenty of high-speed racing action. as well as this , everything or nothing also features hand-to-hand combat , stealth-based scenarios , and a host of different weapons and gadgets , including a remote-controlled spider bomb that you take control of in order to explore some of the levels' nooks and crannies. with past bond titles it's clear that ea has long been trying to bring the world of games and movies closer , and thus give players the chance to actually be 007 rather than just play a game with him in it. everything or nothing is the closest it has come to achieving this goal and also by far the company's best effort to date.

The grid-based rts game is one that used to be traditionally japanese. few such games made it to western shores , but over time the genre has become more popular stateside and in europe. final fantasy tactics (not released in the uk) was particularly popular , as was vandal hearts 1 and 2 and the front mission series. more importantly , advance wars was one of nintendo's most popular rts efforts for the gba console , and has now finished its sequel , advance wars 2. as the black hole army continues to rise , leader strum has created a new base of operations and has set his sights on cosmo land. as a commander within cosmo , your duty is to protect your home from strum and his incoming hordes of commanding officers and their armies. it's not the most inspired story , we know , but it makes way for another in-depth and engrossing series of turn-based conflicts. advance wars 2 is more of an update than anything , this time boasting additional units and new commanding officers and their abilities , all spread across a series of band new campaigns and missions. like its predecessor , advance wars 2 pits players in 2d environments , usually based around forest areas and rivers , viewed from a top-down perspective. the game begins with two armies placed at opposite ends of the grid-based environment , and in most cases , all you have to do is eliminate all enemies. the game is turn-based and each unit has a preset field of movement and attack range. you must use these two aspects to strategically place your units so you can attack whilst incurring minimal damage. but most importantly , and what most other games of this type lack , is the multi-player link-up mode. here you can compete with several friends on the battlefield. victory depends purely on the decisions made by each party - it's that simple. advance wars 2 is a fine sequel and we doubt it'll be the last in the series from nintendo.
